Speech Team Individual Events Descriptions

1. Dramatic Duet Acting--Two students perform a dramatic selection from a play, a novel,

or a screenplay in which each student performs the part of one character. One table and two

chairs are provided. No other props are allowed. (8 min. max)

2. Humorous Duet Acting--Two students perform a humorous selection from a play, a novel,

or a screenplay in which each student performs the part of one character. One table and two

charis are provided. No other props are allowed. (8 min. max.)

3. Dramatic Interpretation--One student performs the parts of all characters in a

dramatic selection from a play, a novel, or a screenplay. These characters are distinguishable

through variation in voice, gesture, and mannerisms. The student may not move his or her feet.

(8 min. max)

4. Humorous Interpretation--One student performs the parts of all characters in a humorous

selection from a play, a novel, or a screenplay. These characters are distinguishable through

variation in voice, gesture, and mannerisms. The student may not move his or her feet. (8 min.

max.)

5. Extemporaneous Speaking--45 minutes prior to performance time, a student is given 3 ......topics/ questions on current events and issues. He or she must select one, and in the 45 min.,

prepare a well-organized, persuasive speech. Students may use his or her own research

materials (Time, Newsweek, US News & World Report, newspapers, etc.). (6 min. Max.)

6. Impromptu Speaking--Studens are given a slip of paper with an old saying, quote, proberb,

concept, idea, or person on it. The student then has a total of 8 min. in which to brainstorm

and deliver a speech on that topic. One notecard and one pen/pencil are allowed, but not

always used.

7. Oratorical Declamation--The student performs a selection from an editorial, an essay, or a

speech. The selection must be precviously published/delivered and be persuasive or .......inspirational in nature. (8 min.max.)

8. Original Oratory--The student writes and performs a persuasive speech. Not more than 150

words may be directly quoted. Topics will vary. (8 min. max.)

9. Original Comedy--The student writes and performs a humorous presentation. No props may .......be used. It may include bodily movement, accents, characters, and dialogue, and plot. Needs

to be kept clean. (8 min. max.)

10. Prose Reading--The student reads cuttings from short stories, novels, letters, etc., containing

less than 50% dialogue. The student prepares two different selections which will both be

performed during tournaments. (8 min. Max.)

11. Radio Speaking-- The student gives a radio newscast, including international,

national, and state news, sports, weather, and a commercial. Depending on the tournament,

the student may bring his or her own script, or will be provided with stories at the meet and

given 45 min. to prepare it there. (limit: 4:50-5:05 min. max.)

12. Special Occasion Speaking--The student writes and performs a speech appropriate for a

realistic high school situation. Needs to be motivational/ inspirational, but humorous as well.

No more than 150 words may be a direction quotation. (8 min. Max)

13. Verse Reading--A student reads and orally interprets selections of poetry. The student will ..... prepare two different selections which will both be performed during tournaments. (6 min.

max.)
