What
to Pack
Clothes
Basics: nice jeans, sweatshirts, long sleeve shirts, short sleeve
shirts, slacks, maybe shorts.
Ave temps are 60's for highs and 40's for lows. On the other
hand, I've seen everything from high's of 80's to highs of 40's.
Nice clothes: Two nice outfits for the two plays we'll see.
Pack items that will travel well and not wrinkle
Over-the-top sweater, jacket, sweatshirt
Dark colors are more fashionable
Water-resistant/repellant jackets
One idea is NOT to take lots of sweatshirts, etc., since most students
like to buy souvinir clothes.
Another idea is to take clothes that you can just throw away once
you've worn them
Shoes
Comfortable walking shoes are a must
A second pair is shoes is a good idea if the first gets wet
Some pair of shoes needs to be dressier
Slip-on shoes will be easier when you are going through the airports
Other
Items
Collapsible travel-umbrella
Batter-operatied alarm clock (share with roommates)
Toiletries in travel bottles and bags
Girls--hair appliances with converters/adapters--again, share with
roommates--everyone shouldn't have to bring everything
Wash cloth and towel
Plastic bags--for dirty clothes, wet items
Decent camera (I have had students bring video cameras before, but it
is an added item to tote around.)
FILM--Buy enough before leaving. It is expensive there. I
would recommend 10-12 rolls of film, depending on how many pictures you
take (& # on the roll)
Extra batteries for camera/walkman
Journal!!
Electrical
Appliances
An adaptor is a connecting
device that allows the 2-pronged US plug to be connected to a foreign
electrical outlet. It does NOT change the voltage. Without
a converter, 240 volts of electricity will surge through and ruin our
110 volt American products.
A converter is a transformer
that changes the amount of electricity before it flows through the
appliance. Because the converter increases or reduces the
voltage, it is a more complex and expensive piece of equipment.
If you bring a dual voltage (built in converter) appliance, you will
still need an adaptor to plug it into. I still recommend both, as
we've had some bad luck going this route.
If you bring a 110 volt appliance, you will need both an adaptor and
converter.
