INFORMATION SPEECH ASSIGNMENT

Point value:             100 points     (This speech is also graded on a rubric.)        
Time Limit:              4 - 7 minutes
Topic Choice categories:      People, places, events, social problems, illnesses
Topic Choice:    MUST BE APPROVED BY ME!  (No duplicates within a class.)
Sources:            A minimum of 3 is required.  MLA style of documentation.
Outlines:            Due the day before speeches start.  Intros and conclusions need specific elements, but the
                         rest is up to you to organize.

I.    Introduction
      A.    Should include an appropriate attention-getting device
               (Example/story/joke/quote/analogy/facts/shocking statement)
      B.    Should introduce topic
              1.    Should intro first main point
              2.    Should intro second main point
              3.    Should intro third main point
      C.    Should explain the importance/value/connection of the topic to the your specific audience of teenagers
      D.    Establish your credibility by telling how you know about this topic (optional)

II.        Your main points are totally up to you.

III.       Divide and organize it logically, depending on what you find and what the audience is interested in.

IV.       Make sure you have supporting information under each point.

V.    Conclusion
        A.    Should include a summary/review of the information presented.
        B.    Should include a reminder of the importance/relevance of the topic to the audience members.
        C.    Be creative with the closing device--tie back to the intro if possible--use the same devices:  example,
                joke, story, bold statement, advice, analogy, quote, or simply some form of repetition.
                             
Other Information/Requirements:
VI.    Outlines
         A.    A general outline will be due the class period before speeches are scheduled to begin.
         B.    Outlines need to be in either sentence, phrase, or word--not a mix!
         C.    If you make major changes to your organization after you turn in your outline, you will need to get a
                 revised outline to me before you give your speech.  Minor changes can be simply made on the original
                 before you speak.
         D.    Corel Word Perfect has a very easy-to-use outlining function!
         E.    No, it does NOT have to be typed.

VII.   Sources
         A.    You must have at least 3 different sources
                 1.   There is NO requirement on type(s) of sources.   HOWEVER, you are HIGHLY discouraged
                        from relying totally on internet sources.
                 2.   Magazines, SIRS articles, books, encyclopedias, vertical files, interviews, etc.
                 3.   Feel free to visit other libraries in the area.
         B.    You will turn in a separate piece of paper, your "Works Cited," that includes all your source information.
         C.    You will need to follow the MLA style of documentation.  You will be getting a grey handout on how to do this.  Follow it carefully!  
         D.    No, it does NOT have to be typed, but it is highly suggested.  Please let me proofread it before you turn it in.    

VIII.  Notecards
         A.    Introduction and conclusion should be written out in full!
         B.    The body may be in written out or outline form.

IV.    Audio-Visual Aids
         A.    If you want to use an A-V, you may, BUT you need to follow the rules as presented on page 328 of
                 your textbook.  Please discuss any visual aide ideas with me, so I can give you advice on how to
                 best incorporate them into your presentation.
         B.    All audio-visual aid ideas need to be approved by me.
         C.    If you need a piece of equipment, make sure it is available in the classroom.
