Liz Weber chose a little-known type of camp for her project. Displaced Persons (DP) camps were set up after the Allies liberated the survivors to help them survive the hard years of rebuilding their families and rebuilding their lives. The hard part was that many DP camps had to be located in the former ghettos and concentration camps the Jews had just suffered through. Though the Allies had the original responsibilities for helping these people, the Jews eventually took over their own economics, education, health care, and government.
And finally, Brooke Spencer watched the critically acclaimed movie, The Pianist, starring academy award winner, Adrien Brody. She told us of the true story of Wladysaw Szpilman, a celebrated composer and pianist, who also was a Polish Jew living with his family in Warsaw when the war broke out. The movie chronicles his incredible journey of survival hiding in the ruins of Warsaw, both outside and inside the ghettos.
