The Artifact Table
Antiques for the table are simply representational. Most items were purchased at Gramma's Attic on W. Main St. in Ottawa, IL
Our Artifact Table is filled with antiques chosen to be representative of items that chronicle the journey of the victims of the Holocaust: from a rich and fulfilling life before the war to the bare simplicity of life in the camps.
The Jews of Europe in the years prior to World War II enjoyed a rich cultural and spiritual life. They were well educated and proud of their heritage. In their communities they were successful businessmen and leaders.
When the Nazis invaded their countries and drove them into Ghettos, they were told to bring only what they could carry.
Some chose to try to save their gold and jewels which they planned to sell later when they were "relocated."
Others took momentos and family items, things for the children, or clothes for their "trip."
In the end, everything had to be left behind or was confiscated by the Nazis. In a concentration camp, a prized possession might be a single cup or spoon.
