Course Description–Applied Communications

Books:    Communication 2000  and  Building Real Life English Skills

Focus of the class:        To learn and practice communication skills that will be beneficial to you in the workplace and in other practical areas of life.  
First semester units include: Listening, speaking, customer service, diversity, real-life communication skills
Second semester units:   Reading in the workplace, writing, letter writing, ethics at work

Daily Work:    1.   Almost all of the work for this class will be done in class.
                         2. Assignments made in class will usually be due at the end of the hour.
                         3. All work needs to be done on your own paper and in MLA!
                         4. Daily grades will also be assigned based on your preparedness for class.

Quizzes:           1.   Quizzes will be announced at least a class period in advance.
                         2. Quiz types will vary from T/F, multiple choice, matching, etc.
                         3. If you miss a quiz, you need to come in during homeroom to make it up.
                         4. You need to take all quizzes to pass the class.
    
 Tests:             1.   Tests will be announced about a week in advance.
                         2. Tests will contain a variety of types of questions.
                         3. Expect a test at the end of each unit.
                         4. You need to take all tests to pass the class.

Writing:           1.    Writing assignments will be your reactions and applications of topics discussed in class.   Second semester will include letter-writing.
                         2.    Writing assignments will be graded on focus, organization, specifics, grammar & spelling, and length requirements.

Spelling:           1.   Spelling words will be based on the words misspelled by you in your writing assignments and other assignments.
                         2.    Spelling lists will be made over a two week period and then quizzes will be on Fridays.

Movies:           1.   We will be watching several movies throughout the year that deal with issues of communication in the workplace or in daily life.
                         2.   Expect both a quiz and a writing assignment after these movies.

Computers:     1.     NUMBER ONE RULE: Behave yourselves on the computers or we won’t go!
                         2.     We may be doing some projects in the library with the internet.
                         3.     Second semester we will be in the computer lab doing some letter-writing.
